MADISON, Wis. — UW Health’s Transplant Center is celebrating 60 years of providing transplant care in the Madison area, a milestone that reflects six decades of medical treatment, research and training. The center will host a free, family-friendly celebration from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Alliant Energy Center. The event will recognize transplant recipients, organ donors, transplant professionals and community members. Dr. Dixon Kaufman, a UW Health transplant specialist, said transplantation is reaching more people as medical technology advances. Researchers are also working to improve outcomes, while the center trains new generations of transplant professionals, he said. “The demand keeps growing,” Kaufman said, adding that the center’s ability to perform transplants is evolving alongside new technology and research. The anniversary highlights the importance of both organ donation and the medical infrastructure required to make transplants possible. For patients and families across Wisconsin, transplant programs can mean access to highly specialized care close to home rather than requiring travel farther from their support networks.
