A 31-year-old Madison man was arrested Sept. 8 after a traffic stop in Sauk County led deputies to a suitcase containing multiple containers of liquid that field-tested positive for methamphetamine, authorities said. The stop occurred shortly before 6:45 p.m. on U.S. Highway 12 in the Town of Sumpter after a deputy pulled over a vehicle for speeding. A Sauk County sheriff’s K9 was brought to the scene and alerted to the odor of narcotics, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A search of the vehicle found the suitcase and the containers of unidentified liquid. Field tests indicated the presence of methamphetamine, with an estimated street value of $26,000, officials said. The driver, identified as Hassan Hashi, was taken to the Sauk County Jail. He was charged with possession with intent to deliver more than 50 grams of methamphetamine, maintaining a drug-trafficking place and possession of drug paraphernalia. Each charge was listed as involving party-to-a-crime allegations, meaning prosecutors claim Hashi acted with at least one other person. The charges are allegations, and a criminal complaint would provide the government’s detailed account of the evidence and circumstances. Hashi has not been found guilty in the case. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement also placed an immigration detainer on Hashi, according to the Sheriff’s Office. A detainer is a request that a jail notify federal immigration authorities before releasing someone in its custody.
