Three children among four killed in shooting at Bend elementary school

Four people, including three children, were killed in a shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, authorities said. The suspected shooter was also killed. Police had not said who shot the suspect or released details about the victims as of Thursday afternoon.

Bend police responded at about 1 p.m. after a report that a man had fired into a car. Within a minute, Deschutes County 911 dispatchers received several calls reporting that someone had entered the school and opened fire, according to police.

Police initially confirmed that at least two people had been taken to a local hospital, with their conditions unknown. Later reports said four people had died. Police spokesperson Sheila Miller said children were among the victims and described the shooting as devastating for Bend.

Officers were searching the school room by room and evacuating those inside, Miller said. The school was placed on lockdown, and police asked the public to stay away from the area.

Families were told to reunite with students at Journey Church, at 61303 S. Highway 97, near Goodwill and Dairy Queen. The FBI’s Portland office was assisting with the investigation. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said she was monitoring the situation and thanked first responders.

Police had not provided further details about the victims or the circumstances of the shooting in the information available Thursday afternoon.
