DNA identification advances Lake Mead barrel homicide case; victim’s name remains private
Clark County officials and Las Vegas police say they have identified the man whose body was found in a barrel at Hemenway Harbor in 2022. They have not yet released his name, and the killing remains under investigation.
Authorities have identified the man found dead inside a barrel at Lake Mead more than three years ago, but have not made his name public, Clark County and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police said Oct. 14, 2026.
The remains were discovered May 1, 2022, at Hemenway Harbor. Investigators determined the man had been shot and that his death was a homicide. Officials said a news conference was planned for Thursday, with Clark County Coroner Melanie Rouse and members of the police homicide section among those expected to speak.
The case attracted national attention as Lake Mead’s water levels fell to historic lows. In the week before the identification was announced, the county released facial approximation images prepared by the FBI laboratory in Quantico, Virginia, seeking information that could help identify the victim. Rouse said at the time that DNA evidence can only be matched against profiles available for comparison, making community tips potentially important to the process.
The barrel case was one of four involving human remains found at Lake Mead in 2022. The other three have been identified: Claude Russell Pensinger, 52, of Las Vegas, who disappeared in 1998; Donald P. Smith, 39, of North Las Vegas, whose death was reported as a 1974 drowning; and Thomas Erndt, 42, of Las Vegas, who reportedly drowned in 2002. Officials have said the causes and manners of death for Pensinger and Erndt were undetermined.
The county’s identification process includes examining remains to estimate characteristics such as age and height, collecting DNA, and comparing results with missing-person reports. Officials have not provided further details about the barrel victim’s identity or the circumstances of the killing.
