Las Vegas’ Foundry project starts at Cashman site, with 1,000 homes planned
A 70-acre downtown redevelopment near Las Vegas Boulevard is planned to include about 1,000 homes, retail and restaurants. The project would replace Cashman Field and the former Grant Sawyer building site, but demolition timing remains uncertain as the land sale awaits finalization.
LAS VEGAS — City and state leaders joined homebuilder Lennar on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, for a ceremonial groundbreaking at the Cashman Center, launching the next phase of a planned 70-acre downtown redevelopment called The Foundry.
The project, near Interstate 11 and Las Vegas Boulevard, is expected to bring about 1,000 homes — a mix of single-family houses and townhomes — to the site of the former Grant Sawyer building and Cashman Field. Las Vegas Mayor Shelley Berkley said the city hopes the development will expand homeownership opportunities and create a neighborhood with restaurants, retail and other amenities.
“We’re reimagining the city and giving people an opportunity to afford a house in a neighborhood that’s going to be beautiful,” Berkley said at the event. The project was described as an effort to provide “attainable” housing, though no home prices or affordability criteria were announced.
Gov. Joe Lombardo also attended the groundbreaking with Berkley and Lennar representatives. The development will ultimately replace Cashman Field, which opened in 1983 and has hosted baseball, soccer, political rallies and community events.
The Las Vegas Lights, who have played at Cashman for nine seasons, planned a farewell during their final game at the stadium on Saturday, with gates scheduled to open at 6 p.m. Team representative Gabriel Palacio said early-arriving fans would receive a miniature replica of the ballpark. Russ Langer, a longtime baseball broadcaster at Cashman, described the stadium’s closing as bittersweet given its decades of varied uses.
No demolition date has been set. Demolition is not expected before the sale is finalized, which was anticipated by the end of 2026.
