UNF suspends Chi Phi chapter through 2031 after hazing and drug findings
A University of North Florida conduct panel found its Omega Zeta chapter of Chi Phi responsible for hazing, endangerment and drug and alcohol violations. The five-year suspension followed records documenting nude pledges and other alleged misconduct, including continued violations of a university order during the investigation.
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The University of North Florida has suspended its Omega Zeta chapter of Chi Phi through 2031 after a university conduct panel found the fraternity responsible for hazing, endangerment and drug and alcohol violations.
University records cited in the investigation include photos from last fall showing pledges posing nude, being sprayed with a hose, using drugs and holding items believed to be connected to fraternity rituals. The chapter also continued to violate a university order while under investigation, according to the records.
The fraternity’s five-year suspension is a year longer than usual. UNF said the extended period is intended to prevent current members from restoring the same chapter culture.
Before its Instagram account was deactivated, the chapter attributed the suspension to “a weird girl not being invited to their party” and to “being in solidarity with Jaden Daniels.” UNF said it did not direct the account’s removal and that an inactive social media account, by itself, would not justify conduct charges.
The university said the first report came from a high school student who had heard about the situation secondhand. No high school students were involved. UNF notified university police, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Children and Families. Students involved were referred for conduct charges, but the university declined to disclose their outcomes, citing privacy laws.
UNF said it has received no reports that the chapter is continuing to operate.
Students interviewed about the case urged people to take concerns seriously. “If you feel like something is off, it’s okay to walk away,” one student said. Another said hazing “shouldn’t be that stressful” and expressed sympathy for those who experienced it.
The suspension leaves the chapter barred from operating at UNF until 2031, following findings that go beyond the fraternity’s public explanation for the penalty.
