Moncrief residents tell Jacksonville sheriff speeding and crime are community concerns

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Residents and business owners in Moncrief raised concerns about speeding, prostitution, homelessness and criminal activity during a neighborhood walk with Sheriff T.K. Waters on Saturday, Oct. 24.

The walk was part of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office’s monthly crime-prevention effort, which brings residents into direct conversation with law enforcement. Waters said the department visits neighborhoods across the city to check in and learn what could be improved.

Linda Jordan, who has lived in Moncrief for two years, said she welcomed officers speaking with residents outside of responding to crimes. She described speeding as a major concern, saying drivers treat neighborhood streets like a racecourse, and also cited prostitution.

Residents also pointed to criminal activity near the Raceway gas station on Golfair Boulevard. Waters said the sheriff’s office would respond to criminal activity there and work to address it.

Michelle Barnhill said she wants officers to avoid treating residents unfairly because of the neighborhood where they live. The concern highlights the importance of building trust alongside efforts to address safety issues.

Wendy Holley, owner of Holley’s Bar-B-Q, said she hopes residents and businesses continue working together to support the community and bring more positive activity to the area.

The sheriff’s office holds the walks in different Jacksonville neighborhoods each month. Its next crime-prevention walk is scheduled for Nov. 14 in District 5.
