Fitch cuts Jacksonville transit agency rating as budget gap nears $40 million

The Jacksonville Transportation Authority’s credit rating was cut this week as the agency grapples with a budget shortfall of nearly $40 million and questions about its financial management.

Fitch Ratings lowered JTA’s rating from AA+ to AA-. The agency cited a diminished assessment of JTA’s financial resilience and concerns about its ability to address current budget problems.

The downgrade adds pressure to a transportation agency whose finances are under review by Jacksonville officials and state investigators. City Council approved a $30 million loan for JTA amid the financial crisis, and council members have formed a committee to examine the agency’s troubles.

The Florida attorney general’s office has also issued subpoenas as part of an investigation involving JTA. Separately, city auditors have questioned the authority’s financial transparency, and a City Council committee is conducting a broader review.

The rating change raises the stakes for the agency as it works to close its budget gap. JTA provides transportation services in the Jacksonville area, making its financial stability a matter of public concern.
