Coastal flood warning covers Northeast Florida as windy, rainy weekend continues

A coastal flood warning is in effect along the Northeast Florida coast and for the St. Johns River and its tributaries as a nor’easter brings onshore winds, rough surf and intermittent showers. Forecasters expect some dry stretches Sunday, but warn that elevated tides and continued onshore winds could cause flooding and beach erosion.

Coastal flood warning covers Northeast Florida as windy, rainy weekend continues

A nor’easter is bringing cloudy, windy conditions and bands of rain to Northeast Florida this weekend, with a coastal flood warning in effect for the entire coast, the St. Johns River and its tributaries, according to the local forecast issued Saturday, Oct. 24.

Some neighborhoods in Duval and St. Johns counties had received as much as a half-inch of rain by Saturday afternoon. Additional rain was expected late Saturday night around the Jacksonville metropolitan area, with a low near 63 degrees.

Sunday is forecast to be cloudy and windy, with a few showers and a high near 74. Although much of the day may stay dry, showers could still move ashore. Forecasters cautioned that high tides will run somewhat higher than usual, raising the risk of coastal and river flooding. Beaches are expected to remain rough, with dangerous conditions in the water.

Onshore winds are forecast to continue through the coming week, bringing a risk of beach erosion. Sunshine is expected to increase Monday, but breezy weather and occasional showers could persist, particularly from midweek onward. Monday’s forecast calls for a high near 72, followed by highs in the mid- to upper 70s through Saturday.

No tropical storms were active Saturday. Forecasters said the western Atlantic bears watching for possible development, but early indications suggested any system that forms would stay away from Florida; many forecast models showed no development.

Residents in flood-prone areas should monitor local alerts and account for changing coastal conditions. The forecast calls for periods of rain tonight and scattered showers at times Sunday.
