A 62-year-old Interlachen man died Saturday evening after his motorcycle overturned while he tried to avoid an ATV crossing State Road 100 in Putnam County, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred at 7:08 p.m. west of State Road 26. Troopers said the ATV was traveling east along the right shoulder of the westbound lane before its driver began crossing the highway diagonally to the south. The motorcyclist was traveling east in the eastbound lane.
The motorcyclist swerved left, and his motorcycle overturned, throwing him from the bike, FHP said. He was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene. Troopers said his next of kin were notified.
The ATV continued south and struck a tree on the right shoulder of the eastbound lane. Its driver, a 60-year-old Melrose man, and two passengers — a 54-year-old Hawthorne woman and a 62-year-old Melrose woman — sustained minor injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, FHP said.
