Ohio State’s ground game surges, but turnovers and penalties linger in Maryland win
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State’s running game delivered its strongest outing of the season Saturday, helping the Buckeyes beat Maryland 45-16 at home. But two turnovers and eight penalties left coach Ryan Day with clear areas to address before next week’s game against Indiana. Sophomore Bo Jackson led the rushing attack with 107 yards on 23 carries, becoming Ohio State’s first 100-yard rusher this season. He scored twice in the second half, including a 25-yard touchdown run in the third quarter that extended the lead to 38-16. His two-yard score in the fourth capped a drive that lasted nearly 10 minutes. Ja’Kobi Jackson added 76 yards on 14 carries. Freshman Legend Bey contributed on offense and kickoff returns, gaining 46 yards on two returns. The Buckeyes’ mistakes gave Maryland chances to stay in the game. Quarterback Julian Sayin lost a fumble in the first quarter after a hit from Zion Elee, setting up a Maryland field goal. In the third, Sayin threw an interception to Daniel Wingate, who returned it 52 yards for a touchdown and brought the Terrapins within 15 points. Sayin said ball security needs to improve, adding that he and Day had discussed the issue. Ohio State was also flagged eight times for 65 yards. Three penalties — including offside and false start infractions — came on a Maryland scoring drive in the second quarter. Day said the team must take responsibility for its discipline, including the coaching staff. Saturday’s win was his 100th game as Ohio State’s head coach, and he said the team would keep working toward a more consistent performance. The Buckeyes now turn to Indiana, the defending national champion, in a more demanding stretch of their schedule.
