Jeremiah Smith’s early TD puts Ohio State ahead of Maryland in Columbus
No. 5 Ohio State took a 7-0 lead on Jeremiah Smith’s 33-yard touchdown catch during the first quarter of its homecoming game Saturday. The Buckeyes entered the matchup seeking a 10th straight series win, with coach Ryan Day marking his 100th game at Ohio State.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Jeremiah Smith gave No. 5 Ohio State an early lead Saturday, catching a 33-yard touchdown pass to cap a quick scoring drive against Maryland at Ohio Stadium.
The score, with 8:40 left in the first quarter, put the Buckeyes ahead 7-0 in their homecoming game. Ohio State reached the end zone in two plays, covering 36 yards in 67 seconds after Phillip Bell returned a Maryland punt to the Terrapins’ 36-yard line.
Maryland won the coin toss and chose to receive in the second half. Ohio State punted on its opening possession, then its defense forced a three-and-out on Maryland’s first drive.
The game is the teams’ first meeting in three years. Ohio State came in looking for its 10th consecutive victory over Maryland, which had an 0-39 record against ranked Big Ten opponents, according to the game-day report. Saturday also marked Ryan Day’s 100th game as the Buckeyes’ head coach.
Ohio State was without 10 players, including wide receiver Brandon Inniss and four offensive linemen. Wide receiver Devin McCuin and cornerback Jay Timmons were listed as game-time decisions. Maryland reported 12 players out and two game-time decisions.
The Buckeyes’ receiver depth could be tested: Inniss was unavailable, and McCuin’s status was uncertain. Maryland also brought a notable receiving threat in Chris Durr Jr., averaging 8.4 catches per game, second in the country behind Smith, according to the report.
Ohio State entered the game with three difficult tests ahead and an opportunity to build momentum before that stretch. Former Buckeye Malcolm Jenkins, a two-time Super Bowl champion and 2008 Jim Thorpe Award winner, was honored before kickoff as the game’s victory bell ringer.
