CLEVELAND — The Browns erased a late deficit Sunday, beating the Carolina Panthers 21-18 after quarterback Deshaun Watson connected with tight end Harold Fannin Jr. for a go-ahead touchdown with 1:48 remaining. Carolina had taken an 18-13 lead with 4:25 left when Bryce Young threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to John Metchie III. Cleveland answered with an eight-play, 65-yard drive, its second consecutive game-winning comeback, according to the game report. The Browns nearly lost possession before they could finish the drive. With 2:29 remaining, Panthers defensive back Akayleb Evans intercepted a Watson pass in the end zone, but a roughing-the-passer penalty on linebacker Bobby Okereke nullified the turnover. Three plays later, Watson found Fannin for a 14-yard score. Watson then completed a two-point conversion pass to Denzel Boston, putting Cleveland ahead by three. Carolina drove into Browns territory in the final moments, but safety Ronnie Hickman intercepted Young’s pass at the Cleveland 46-yard line with nine seconds left. Watson finished 16 of 30 for 144 yards and two touchdown passes, and ran 11 times for 45 yards. Fannin caught seven passes for 51 yards. Young completed 26 of 48 attempts for 290 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The Browns moved to 2-1; Carolina fell to 1-2. Cleveland opened the scoring with a 48-yard field goal, then added a touchdown after a fourth-down stop gave it the ball near midfield. The Panthers scored four field goals before Metchie’s fourth-quarter touchdown. Watson’s strongest stretch came late: after completing 10 of 21 passes for 67 yards through three quarters, he went 6 for 9 for 77 yards in the fourth. Browns fans had given him a negative reception during a preseason game against Buffalo on Aug. 22, but he was cheered by most of the crowd when he returned after taking a hard hit Sunday.
