COLUMBUS, Ohio — Jeremiah Smith caught four touchdown passes, including a 72-yard score, to lead No. 7 Ohio State to a 42-19 win over Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 26, in the teams’ Big Ten opener. The junior wide receiver tied Ohio State’s record for touchdown receptions in a game. Three of his scores came in the first half, when quarterback Julian Sayin also ran for a touchdown to give the Buckeyes a 28-10 halftime lead. Sayin was responsible for four total touchdowns, including two passing scores to Smith. Smith’s fourth touchdown, a 26-yard catch, put Ohio State ahead 35-13 with 10:07 remaining. Ja’Kobi Jackson added a two-yard rushing touchdown late in the game to complete the scoring. Illinois’ Jordan Anderson had a 22-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, and kicker Ethan Moczulski made two field goals. Ohio State improved to 3-1 and won its 10th consecutive game against the Fighting Illini, a streak dating to 2008. The rivalry’s Illibuck trophy—a wooden turtle bearing the game’s score—stays in Columbus. The Buckeyes continue Big Ten play on the road next weekend against Iowa.
