Guardians rally from 0-2 deficit, earn ALCS berth with shutout in Cleveland
Cleveland blanked Chicago 2-0 in Game 5, completing a rare comeback after losing the first two games of the American League Division Series. Gavin Williams struck out 12, and José Ramírez supplied the decisive runs with a fourth-inning homer.
CLEVELAND — The Guardians have reached the American League Championship Series after overcoming an 0-2 deficit against the Chicago White Sox, closing out the Division Series with a 2-0 victory Saturday night at Progressive Field.
Gavin Williams struck out 12 over six innings, and José Ramírez broke a scoreless tie with a two-run home run in the fourth. Cleveland’s pitching staff combined for 21 strikeouts, a postseason record for a nine-inning game, while limiting Chicago to three hits.
The comeback was rare: Cleveland became the 11th team to win a best-of-five series after falling behind 0-2, and one of only four to do so after losing the first two games at home.
Chicago starter Sean Burke retired the first nine Guardians hitters before Steven Kwan opened the fourth with a single. Ramírez then drove a knuckle-curve over the right-field wall, giving Cleveland all the offense it needed.
The White Sox managed little against Williams, who allowed just one hit through five innings. Chicago’s Kyle Teel broke up the no-hit bid with a two-out single in the sixth. Cleveland’s bullpen took over from there, with Cade Smith recording a five-out save and striking out the side in the ninth.
“Confidence that we have in this group has been really tested and refined over the course of the last two years,” Smith said. He said the team’s experience dealing with adversity had built a steady foundation for the postseason.
Cleveland next faces Tampa Bay in the ALCS, which is scheduled to begin Monday night. The Guardians are seeking their first World Series appearance since 2016 and their first championship since 1948.
