Morganton reports 841,500 gallons of wastewater overflows after heavy rain
Two sewer overflows in Morganton on Sunday discharged a combined 841,500 gallons, including about 840,000 gallons into Hunting Creek. City officials said rainwater entering the sewer system during flooding caused the spills.
Heavy rain and flooding triggered two wastewater overflows in Morganton on Sunday, including a spill of about 840,000 gallons into Hunting Creek, city officials said.
The larger overflow began at 1 a.m. at a sewer junction box on Vine Arden Road, near the city’s wastewater treatment plant, and ended at 3 p.m. Officials said the discharge was primarily rainwater that had entered the municipal sewer system during the storms.
A second overflow began at 1 a.m. at a manhole at 810 West Fleming Drive and stopped at 6 a.m. About 1,500 gallons flowed into a storm drain, according to the city.
Together, the two overflows released approximately 841,500 gallons. The city’s report identified the receiving waterways and spill volumes but did not provide information about water-quality testing or any public health advisories.
