Lenoir father urges partygoers to speak up after son’s fatal shooting
Michael “Mikey” Cowling, 20, was shot during an unsupervised gathering after Hibriten High School’s homecoming celebration. His father is asking attendees to share information as investigators work to determine what led to the shooting.
LENOIR, N.C. — The father of a 20-year-old man fatally shot at a homecoming weekend gathering in Lenoir is urging people who attended to contact investigators with what they know.
Michael “Mikey” Cowling was shot early Saturday, Oct. 10, at a “Pink Out” party in the 4800 block of Grandin Road, in the Kings Creek neighborhood. The gathering followed Hibriten High School’s homecoming celebration Friday night.
Caldwell County deputies found Cowling with a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken by air to a medical facility, where he died shortly after arriving.
Investigators have not identified a motive. Witnesses said a single shot was fired after a dispute involving Cowling, according to deputies. Officers found only a small number of people at the scene, though dozens of young people had attended earlier, authorities said.
Cowling’s father, Mike, remembered his son as someone who was quick to help others and appealed to partygoers to come forward. “How can nobody … 80 kids … How can nobody see a life be taken and not come forward and not say anything,” he said.
Authorities said the gathering had been promoted online to local youth and had no parents or chaperones supervising it. The state Alcohol Law Enforcement agency is assisting the investigation after reports that minors may have consumed alcohol at the property.
The investigation is ongoing.
