Water valve failure brings down bridge wall, shuts Moores Mill Road crossing

ATLANTA — A bridge carrying Moores Mill Road over Peachtree Creek has closed after an overnight water valve failure caused one of its buttress walls to collapse, Atlanta City Councilmember Dustin Hill said Oct. 20.

The closure is expected to last through at least Oct. 26 as engineers assess the bridge, Hill said. The timeline could change depending on the findings of that review.

Hill, who represents District 9, said the crossing is more than 100 years old and has experienced multiple problems over the years. Even if engineers determine it can reopen after repairs, he said, replacing the bridge will remain a priority for council districts 9 and 8.

The closure follows a water main break in the area in 2012. Further details about the valve failure and the damage were not available in the information provided by the city council member.
