College Park recognizes 10-year-old who helped hold back August house fire
COLLEGE PARK, Ga. — A 10-year-old boy who helped keep a fire from spreading through his family’s home was honored by city leaders during a College Park City Council meeting Monday. Mayor Bianca Motley Broom and Fire Chief Sterling P. Jones presented Cornelius Chones with a proclamation recognizing his actions during the August fire. According to the proclamation, Cornelius’ grandfather spotted flames moving toward the attic and directed him to climb onto the roof with a garden hose. Cornelius helped hold the fire back until College Park Fire Rescue arrived, the proclamation said. His actions helped prevent the blaze from causing a potentially devastating loss of the home. Cornelius’ six siblings escaped without injury. Jones said the response showed skills firefighters train for over many months. “He willingly jumped in and did it,” the chief said. Cornelius did not speak during the presentation. Motley Broom told him he had gained an extended family in the city’s fire department and said officials were proud of him. The city’s recognition followed a fire that could have put the home and its occupants at greater risk as flames approached the attic. No further details about the fire’s cause or damage were provided.
