Gulf depression may become Isaias, bringing weekend rain to Georgia
Tropical Depression No. 9 could strengthen into Hurricane Isaias before reaching the northern Gulf Coast Friday. The system may bring heavy rain across Georgia and the wider Southeast on Saturday and possibly Sunday.
A tropical depression in the Gulf of Mexico could become a named storm Tuesday night or Wednesday and strengthen into a hurricane by Thursday, bringing the prospect of heavy weekend rain to Georgia, according to Severe Weather Team 2 Chief Meteorologist Brad Nitz.
The storm would be named Isaias if it reaches tropical-storm strength. Its projected track as of Tuesday, Oct. 6, pointed toward landfall along the northern Gulf Coast Friday afternoon or evening. Winds are expected to weaken as the system moves inland, while heavy rain could spread across the Southeast Saturday and continue into Sunday.
The forecast does not specify how much rain Georgia could receive or which areas might see the heaviest amounts. The system’s timing and track will determine its effects across the state.
