Atlanta Dream likely to host WNBA Finals games in 3,500-seat arena
The Dream are expected to play their Finals home games at College Park’s Gateway Center Arena after scheduling conflicts blocked access to larger venues. The 3,500-seat building is far smaller than State Farm Arena, where Atlanta drew more than 9,500 fans for each of its first three playoff games.
The Golden State Valkyries are likely to face the Atlanta Dream in WNBA Finals road games at Gateway Center Arena, a 3,500-seat venue in College Park about 45 minutes from downtown Atlanta.
Atlanta has been unable to secure a larger arena for its home dates in the best-of-seven series, according to reports published Sunday. The Dream’s regular home, Gateway Center Arena, has hosted the team for the past six seasons. The team instead played its first three playoff games at State Farm Arena, which seats more than 17,000 and drew over 9,500 fans for each of those games.
State Farm Arena is unavailable for the possible Atlanta home games. A concert is scheduled there for Oct. 22, when Game 3 could be played; the Atlanta Hawks have their home opener on Oct. 24, the potential date for Game 4; and the Hawks are scheduled to host the Miami Heat on Oct. 29, when a Game 6 could take place.
The Dream also explored other regional venues, including 13,000-seat Gas South Arena in Gwinnett and Georgia Tech’s 8,500-seat McCamish Pavilion, but those efforts did not produce an alternative, according to reports.
Golden State also faced a potential arena conflict: a Doja Cat concert had been booked at Chase Center for Oct. 26, a possible Game 5 date. The Valkyries had secured a contingency date in the concert contract, and the show was moved to Oct. 25 after Golden State swept the Las Vegas Aces.
The situation reflects a long-running challenge for WNBA teams whose arenas host other events. In past seasons, playoff games have been shifted to smaller venues when concerts or other sports had priority. The Valkyries experienced a similar issue last year, moving their first playoff game to San Jose’s SAP Center because Chase Center had already been booked for the Laver Cup tennis tournament.
Atlanta’s circumstances differ because Gateway Center is the Dream’s regular home, rather than a temporary venue. Still, the likely capacity is a sharp contrast with the crowds the team drew downtown during the playoffs. The Dream are scheduled to return to State Farm Arena full-time in 2027 under a multiyear agreement.
