San Rafael man dies after stabbing at Northgate One; coworker arrested
A man died Monday after being stabbed during a confrontation with a coworker at a business in San Rafael’s Northgate One Shopping Center, police said. The suspect, a 20-year-old Richmond resident, was arrested on suspicion of murder. San Rafael police and firefighters responded shortly after 1 p.m. to a report of an unconscious man near the shopping center’s south side, in the 700 block of Las Gallinas Avenue. Paramedics found him with an apparent stab wound. Bystanders were assisting him, but he died after being taken to a nearby hospital. Police identified the suspect as Justin Amilcar Gutierrez-Navarette. Investigators said the two men worked together and had been involved in an ongoing dispute. The dispute escalated into a physical fight inside the business, during which police say Gutierrez-Navarette stabbed the man. The injured man left through the business’s rear entrance and collapsed outside, according to police. Detectives initially identified him as an employee based on his clothing. His name had not been released as of Tuesday morning. Gutierrez-Navarette contacted San Rafael police to arrange his surrender, authorities said. He was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of murder. The allegation has not been proven in court.
