Fleet Week will limit Waymo rides across parts of San Francisco’s waterfront

Waymo pickups and drop-offs will be prohibited in sections of the Marina and near Fisherman’s Wharf during Fleet Week, with much of the Embarcadero also off-limits. The temporary geofenced restrictions apply this weekend.

Fleet Week will limit Waymo rides across parts of San Francisco’s waterfront
San Francisco transit officials are restricting Waymo service near the waterfront during Fleet Week, barring pickups and drop-offs in parts of the Marina and near Fisherman’s Wharf and closing much of the Embarcadero to the driverless vehicles. The restrictions take effect this weekend as Fleet Week festivities bring crowds to the city’s waterfront. Waymo rides will not be allowed north of Lombard Street in the Marina or north of Francisco Street near Fisherman’s Wharf. Much of the Embarcadero will also be outside the service area, according to a map from the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. The boundaries are being enforced through geofencing, which limits where Waymo vehicles can operate. The restrictions follow problems during the city’s July 4 celebrations, though officials’ specific reasons for the Fleet Week boundaries were not detailed in the information released. The limits may affect people relying on Waymo for trips to or from waterfront events. Riders will need to arrange pickups and drop-offs outside the restricted areas while the temporary rules are in effect.
