Car entering Embarcadero tunnel halts Muni Metro service under Market Street
A car drove onto the tracks at Embarcadero on Saturday, prompting an overnight shutdown of the Market Street subway for inspection and repairs. Muni rerouted trains and provided bus shuttles, while BART continued running between Embarcadero and Balboa Park.
A car drove into the Muni Metro tunnel at Embarcadero on Saturday afternoon, shutting down train service between Van Ness and Embarcadero for the rest of the night as crews inspected and repaired the trackway.
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency posted an alert at 3:46 p.m. saying a vehicle had entered the trackway. The closure meant trains would not stop at Van Ness, Civic Center, Powell, Montgomery or Embarcadero stations until service resumed, likely Sunday morning, the agency said.
Muni changed routes to keep trains out of the tunnel. K, L and M trains heading downtown turned back at Church Station, while N-Judah trains stopped before entering the subway. Bus shuttles operated in both directions between Market and Castro streets and the Caltrain station at Fourth and King streets. BART continued running between Embarcadero and Balboa Park.
The disruption caught some passengers off guard. An N-Judah train bound toward Caltrain stopped at Church and Duboce streets, where passengers were directed to alternative shuttle service. At the station, some riders waited for a bus without knowing why the train had stopped.
