Car in Embarcadero Muni tunnel disrupts downtown trains in both directions

A car drove into San Francisco’s Muni tunnel at the Embarcadero on Saturday afternoon, disrupting train service through downtown in both directions.

The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency announced the disruption at 3:46 p.m. and arranged bus shuttles between Castro and Market streets. For N-Judah passengers, shuttles were set to run between Church and Duboce streets and Caltrain.

Some eastbound K-Ingleside, L-Taraval and M-Oceanview trains were directed to continue one stop beyond Castro to Church Street, then turn around. The situation had not been reported cleared as of 5:15 p.m.

Vehicle entries into the rail tunnel are rare, but a similar incident occurred in 2012, when an SUV became stuck about half a mile inside after entering near Church and Duboce. The tunnel was closed for more than two hours. Police said at the time that the driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, failing to obey a stop sign and driving on train tracks. The outcome of that case was not immediately known.
