San Francisco-bound I-80 shut between Fifth and 15th streets for deck repairs
Caltrans closed westbound I-80 through San Francisco for weekend repairs, with drivers facing delays of up to an hour. The freeway segment is expected to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
Drivers heading into San Francisco from Oakland are facing a weekend closure of westbound Interstate 80, where Caltrans crews are repairing the freeway deck before the rainy season.
The closure runs from Fifth Street to 15th Street. As of Saturday, delays from the Bay Bridge toll plaza to the Fremont Street exit—the first San Francisco exit—were about 45 minutes, with overall delays reaching 45 minutes to an hour. Traffic has also spilled onto city streets.
Caltrans spokesperson Lori Shepherd urged travelers to plan ahead and consider public transportation or another bridge, depending on their route. Fifth Street is the last exit available to drivers entering the city from Oakland before the closed stretch.
Crews are applying a polyester-concrete overlay to the Bayshore Freeway deck. The viaducts are more than 70 years old, and the work is intended to cover potholes and create a smoother road surface.
The work continues a project that began in April with resurfacing on eastbound I-80. Caltrans is aiming to finish the improvements before wet winter weather arrives. The westbound section is scheduled to reopen by 5 a.m. Monday.
