23-year-old Vacaville driver dies in crash near Cordelia scales on I-80
A 23-year-old Vacaville man died Sunday after his Hyundai left westbound Interstate 80 and struck a tree near Fairfield. The California Highway Patrol is investigating; alcohol may have been a factor, but toxicology results are pending.
A 23-year-old Vacaville man died early Sunday after his car left westbound Interstate 80 and hit a tree near the Cordelia commercial vehicle scales, the California Highway Patrol said.
An automated iPhone crash alert brought CHP officers to the scene shortly before 3 a.m. The agency’s Golden Gate Communications Center received the notification at about 2:52 a.m., and Solano Area officers arrived at 3:01 a.m. They found a silver 2014 Hyundai Elantra that had crashed just west of the scales.
The driver, the car’s only occupant, was trapped and unresponsive. Officers began CPR, and Fairfield firefighters extricated him. He was taken to NorthBay Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 3:27 a.m.
Investigators’ preliminary findings indicate the Hyundai veered off the right side of the freeway. The cause remains under investigation. CHP said the driver was believed not to have been wearing a seat belt and that alcohol may have contributed; official toxicology results are pending.
The Solano County Coroner’s Office will release the man’s name after relatives are notified. CHP is asking anyone who witnessed the crash to contact its Solano Area office.
