Two children seriously hurt while biking in Half Moon Bay; driver arrested
Two 6-year-olds were hospitalized after a vehicle struck them near Grandview Boulevard and Golden Gate Avenue Saturday evening. Deputies say the driver fled and was later found hiding in a wooded area south of Bancroft Avenue.
Two 6-year-old children were seriously injured Saturday evening when a vehicle struck them as they rode bicycles in Half Moon Bay, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office. The children were taken to a hospital and were listed in stable condition.
Deputies were called at about 5:45 p.m. to the area of Grandview Boulevard and Golden Gate Avenue. Investigators said the driver left the scene after the collision. A witness gave deputies a description of the driver and vehicle, and authorities later located the vehicle.
With help from the Daly City Police Department’s Drone Unit, deputies found the suspect hiding in a wooded area south of Bancroft Avenue, the sheriff’s office said. The suspect was identified as 37-year-old Robert Schumann of San Francisco.
Investigators said they found evidence Schumann was under the influence of alcohol. He was booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility on suspicion of driving under the influence causing bodily injury, hit-and-run resulting in injury, driving with a license suspended because of a DUI conviction, and driving with a blood-alcohol concentration over .01 while on probation.
The vehicle was towed and impounded. The charges are allegations; the case will proceed through the legal system.
