Fatal crash involving up to eight vehicles shuts southbound I-880 at Fremont interchange

A fatal crash involving as many as eight vehicles shut down southbound Interstate 880 at the Mission Boulevard interchange in Fremont early Sunday, Oct. 18, as California Highway Patrol officers investigated the collision.

The first crash was reported at about 3:57 a.m. near a disabled vehicle on the right shoulder and on-ramp area, according to the CHP incident log. By 4:32 a.m., additional collisions had been reported, with the incident involving an estimated seven to eight vehicles, including a white Ford Transit van.

A caller told dispatchers that one vehicle struck the disabled vehicle, spun onto the freeway and was hit again. Another vehicle ended up in an embankment just south of the State Route 262 interchange. Reports that people were trapped led CHP to request three tow trucks. The Alameda County Coroner was notified at about 5:37 a.m.

At 5:58 a.m., CHP issued a SigAlert, reporting that southbound lanes 2, 3 and 4 were blocked. The first lane briefly reopened, but the Mission Boulevard/SR-262 flyover remained closed. Authorities later requested a full closure of southbound I-880 at Mission Boulevard and directed officers to hold vehicles on the Mission off-ramp.

The CHP is investigating. Authorities had not released the identity of the person who died or further details about the crash in the information available Sunday morning.
