A three-vehicle collision involving an overturned tractor-trailer shut down I-495 North near Exit 14 in New Bedford on Saturday morning, sending one person to the hospital with serious injuries and forcing crews to close Exit 12 for cleanup.
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. â A tractor-trailer rolled onto its side in a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 495 North on Saturday morning, sending one person to a local hospital with serious injuries and forcing state police to close a highway exit while crews worked to clear the roadway.
Massachusetts State Troopers from the Middleboro barracks responded to the crash at approximately 8:42 a.m. The collision occurred on I-495 North at Exit 14, according to state police.
The crash involved two passenger vehicles and the tractor-trailer, which came to rest on its side. One person was transported to a local hospital with injuries described by police as serious but not life-threatening.
State police said Exit 12 was closed and the northbound side of the highway was shut down to allow for cleanup of the roadway. The breakdown lane remained open, allowing traffic to squeeze past the scene.
It was not immediately clear what caused the crash or how long the closures would remain in effect. State police did not release the names of the people involved or say whether any citations had been issued.
The crash added to a busy morning for emergency crews in the region. The overturned rig, which blocked multiple lanes, is the kind of incident that can ripple through traffic patterns on the busy north-south corridor that carries commuters and freight through southeastern Massachusetts.
State police urged drivers to expect delays in the area and to use caution while passing the cleanup zone. No further information was immediately available.
