Sun City murder case revived after judge dismisses earlier conviction
George Crater is back in custody on a first-degree murder charge after a judge dismissed his earlier case over a disclosure issue involving a sheriff’s detective. The home tied to the case was also the scene of a 2025 shooting that left two people dead and another injured.
SUN CITY, Ariz. — George Crater was arrested again Wednesday on a first-degree murder charge in the death of his tenant, Thomas Galatola, after a judge dismissed Crater’s earlier case because the defense had not been told that a sheriff’s detective was under investigation for misconduct.
A judge set Crater’s cash appearance bond at $1 million. He is expected back in court next week. The dismissal was without prejudice, allowing prosecutors to refile the charge; they did so days after Crater was released.
Galatola, 72, died from blunt force trauma to the head after an alleged attack at a home Crater owned in Sun City. Court records say Crater flew from Washington to the Phoenix area, entered the property through the garage and confronted Galatola over unpaid rent. Records allege Crater restrained him with zip ties, beat him, threatened to kill him and stabbed him with a kitchen knife.
In hospital body-camera footage cited in the case, Galatola described being struck with a bundle of zip ties and a fist, kicked, and stabbed. He identified Crater in a photo lineup, court records say, before falling into a coma days later.
A jury found Crater guilty of murder in April. The judge’s decision to dismiss the case came after finding that the defense had not been notified about the detective’s misconduct investigation. The available information does not describe the nature of that investigation or establish that it was related to the allegations against Crater.
The same home, near 99th Avenue and Bell Road, was the site of another deadly investigation in June 2025. Deputies responding to reports of gunfire found three people shot. Two died and one was hospitalized. Investigators characterized the incident as a murder-suicide. It occurred while Crater was awaiting trial in Galatola’s death.
Maricopa County did not provide additional information about the 2025 case when asked. The available details do not establish a connection between that shooting and the allegations in Galatola’s death.
