Arizona trust-land plans could accommodate nearly 93,000 homes
State land sales and residential zoning between fiscal 2023 and 2026 have created capacity for an estimated 92,898 housing units. The figure represents potential development, not homes already built or guaranteed to be constructed.
Arizona state trust land sales and zoning decisions have opened a potential path for nearly 93,000 housing units, according to figures from the Arizona State Land Department.
From fiscal 2023 through fiscal 2026, the department auctioned more than 7,650 acres expected to support 31,724 homes. Over the same period, it zoned another 11,295 acres for residential use, which could accommodate an additional 61,174 units once that land is auctioned.
Together, the figures amount to capacity for 92,898 homes. They do not mean those homes have been built, or that all the land will be sold and developed. Zoning establishes what may be built; an auction and subsequent development decisions still lie ahead for the zoned acreage.
The totals signal a substantial potential addition to Arizona’s housing supply, but do not specify where the units would be located, when construction might begin, or whether they would be affordable to households facing the state’s housing costs. The figures also do not describe what infrastructure or water resources would be needed to support development.
Those details will matter to communities weighing new housing against the demands it can place on roads, utilities and the desert landscape. The state’s figures measure development potential, while local planning and future project decisions will shape what is ultimately built.
