Apache Junction man charged after woman says she was abducted at gunpoint

Police say an 18-year-old woman was taken from near her home and held for hours on Sept. 24 before persuading her captor to release her. Investigators identified a suspect with help from a neighbor’s surveillance video and license-plate technology, and are asking whether he may have harmed others.

Apache Junction man charged after woman says she was abducted at gunpoint
An 18-year-old woman was returning home from work shortly before 1 a.m. Sept. 24 when, police say, a man pulled her from the area of 16th Avenue and San Marcos Drive in Apache Junction at gunpoint, covered her head and took her to his home. The woman was held for several hours and assaulted multiple times, according to police. She eventually persuaded the man to let her go, Apache Junction Police Chief Michael Pooley said. Pedro Espinoza Torres, 32, has been arrested and faces charges of kidnapping, aggravated assault and sexual abuse. The allegations have not been proven in court. Police said the woman’s account and a neighbor’s surveillance footage helped investigators identify Torres. The video showed a vehicle returning her to her neighborhood, Pooley said, and officers used license-plate technology to trace the vehicle to a neighbor who lived several houses from the woman. Pooley said the woman resisted throughout the ordeal and that her actions helped police identify the suspect. Investigators are continuing to look into whether Torres may be connected to other incidents. “We don’t know if he’s done this in the past,” Pooley said, urging anyone with information to contact police. Anyone with relevant information can call the Apache Junction Police Department at 480-982-8260 or submit a tip through the department’s online crime-tip page.
