Scottsdale families face school moves after Laguna and Copper Ridge closures
The Scottsdale school board voted 3-2 to close Laguna and Copper Ridge at the end of the school year, saying the plan affects the fewest students and saves the most money. Laguna families are grieving the decision and weighing their options as they try to make the school’s final year meaningful.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Hundreds of students will have to attend different schools next fall after the Scottsdale Unified School District governing board voted 3-2 to close Laguna and Copper Ridge at the end of the school year.
Before the vote, parents asked board members to postpone a decision and spend more time reviewing the data. The board proceeded, saying the closures would affect the fewest students and produce the greatest savings among the options considered.
At Laguna Elementary, parents described the decision as painful but said they want the remaining school year to be a time of connection and celebration. A message shared with families said the community’s “hearts are heavy” and pledged to fill the year with “joy, connection, celebration and plenty of Laguna spirit.”
Scottsdale Unified Governing Board President Donna Lewis acknowledged the disruption for families. “My deep heart is with the people who are going to be hurting in transition,” she said.
Some parents are considering leaving the district. Micah Desjardins, whose son is autistic, said Laguna’s proximity to home and the family’s close relationship with school staff have been important sources of reassurance. The school is three minutes from his home, he said, and he and his son’s teacher can contact each other directly. Desjardins said he is considering other options, including private school.
The district has not announced what it will do with the Laguna campus after the school closes. In the meantime, families and staff face a final year together before students are reassigned.
