Phoenix police fatally shoot man at apartment complex near Central and Sunland
A man died Saturday after Phoenix police officers shot him at an apartment complex near Central and Sunland avenues, just north of Southern Avenue, authorities said. Officers were called to the complex at about 12:45 p.m. after reports of a man carrying a gun and a knife. Police received additional information while responding that the man had entered an apartment in the complex, Phoenix police Sgt. Chris Berrelleza said. According to Berrelleza, the man came back outside holding both weapons and did not comply with officers’ commands to put them down. Officers then used pepperballs in an effort to gain his compliance, police said. The man allegedly raised the gun toward officers, who fired and struck him. Police have not said how many officers fired. Officers provided first aid until medical personnel arrived. The man was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition and later pronounced dead, Berrelleza said. No officers were injured, and police said they were not looking for any additional suspects. The Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Major Incident Division was responding to take over the investigation. Authorities had not released the man’s identity in the information available Saturday night.
