A 47-year-old pedestrian died after a vehicle struck him near 23rd Avenue and Williams Drive in Phoenix on Sunday evening, police said.
Officers were called to the serious crash at about 6:15 p.m. Preliminary findings indicate the vehicle was heading north when its driver apparently experienced a medical emergency and left the travel lane, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
The vehicle crossed the southbound lanes, mounted the sidewalk and hit the man. It dragged him a short distance before striking the side of a nearby building and stopping in landscaping, police said.
The pedestrian was taken to a hospital, where he later died. The driver was also hospitalized for treatment related to the medical event. Police said they do not believe impairment contributed to the crash.
The department’s Vehicular Crimes Unit is investigating.
