Mesa man faces felony charge in fatal shooting of neighbor Maria Lewis
Dulance Morin, an Arizona Attorney General’s Office investigator, was indicted on a negligent homicide charge in the February death of 32-year-old Maria Lewis. The mother of seven was shot during an early-morning walk near Ellsworth and Ray roads in Mesa.
A Maricopa County grand jury indicted Dulance Morin on a felony negligent homicide charge in connection with the February shooting death of his neighbor, 32-year-old Maria Lewis, according to court records.
The indictment was returned Sept. 10. It alleges Morin caused Lewis’ death through criminal negligence. Morin, 47, has not been convicted. Because the case involved a firearm, he could face an increased prison sentence if found guilty.
Lewis was shot on Feb. 28 while walking near Ellsworth and Ray roads in Mesa and died at the scene. She was the mother of seven.
Mesa police submitted a negligent homicide charge to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office in March, after serving search warrants, conducting interviews and reviewing forensic evidence. Morin and Lewis were neighbors.
Morin has worked as an investigator for the Arizona Attorney General’s Office since 2016. The office said he remains employed in an administrative role and will keep that position unless he is convicted. The office also said Attorney General Kris Mayes believes Morin will be found not guilty.
