A 4-year-old died and a 2-year-old was injured after a Dodge Challenger struck the family’s Toyota on eastbound Interstate 10 in west Phoenix. Arizona DPS is investigating and has not ruled out impairment by the Dodge driver.
A 4-year-old child died and a 2-year-old was injured in a crash involving three vehicles on eastbound Interstate 10 near 43rd Avenue in west Phoenix on Tuesday, Oct. 6, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The collision happened at about 11:20 a.m. The children were riding in the back of a Toyota Corolla, whose driver was their mother, when a Dodge Challenger struck the car from behind. The Toyota then hit a Chrysler Pacifica, DPS said.
Both children were wearing seat belts, according to DPS. The 4-year-old was taken to a hospital and later died. The toddler was treated at a separate hospital for injuries described as non-life-threatening. Their mother was not hurt.
The Challenger’s driver and a passenger in the Chrysler sustained minor injuries. Investigators are working to determine what led to the crash and have not ruled out whether the Challenger driver was impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Eastbound I-10 was closed at 43rd Avenue as crews responded, and DPS expected the closure to last several hours. Westbound traffic was not affected.
