Jalen Hurts’ calf blood clot sidelines him for at least four games

The Philadelphia Eagles placed quarterback Jalen Hurts on injured reserve Saturday, Oct. 17, after a blood clot in his calf moved, the team announced. The move means Hurts will miss at least four games, with his earliest possible return in Week 11 against Pittsburgh after the Eagles’ bye.

Hurts is expected to miss games against the Panthers, Cowboys, Commanders and Giants. Backup Tanner McKee will make his third career start Sunday against Carolina. Rookie Cole Payton and Joe Milton, recently signed from the Cowboys’ practice squad, are the other quarterbacks on the roster.

The Eagles said Thursday that Hurts would miss the Week 6 game after a blood clot was found during an ultrasound in London the previous Saturday. The team said a follow-up scan Wednesday evening showed the superficial clot had moved. In a statement, the Eagles said Hurts’ “health and safety are our highest priority.”

Hurts, 28, has led Philadelphia to a 2-3 record this season. He has completed 57.8% of his passes for 933 yards, with eight touchdowns and three interceptions.

The team also promoted running back Jaydon Blue from its practice squad to the 53-player roster and elevated outside linebacker Keyshawn James-Newby and safety Cole Wisniewski for the Panthers game. The Eagles did not activate any players whose return-from-injured-reserve practice windows had opened, leaving Landon Dickerson, Eli Stowers, Grant Calcaterra and Jakorian Bennett sidelined for at least another week.
