Kensington rowhouse fire kills 22-year-old mother and her 3-year-old daughter

A 22-year-old Philadelphia mother has died from injuries sustained in a Kensington rowhouse fire that killed her 3-year-old daughter days earlier, officials said this week.

The fire broke out around 3:30 a.m. Sunday in a home on D Street near Ontario Street. Firefighters rescued the child and an adult from a back room, according to officials. The girl was pronounced dead at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children.

Another adult and a child who lived in the home escaped, according to reports on the fire. Officials said there were no smoke detectors inside the house.

Fire department officials said the blaze appeared to have been caused by a lithium-ion battery from an electric bicycle. The Philadelphia Fire Department and the city medical examiner’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
