Eagles turn to Tanner McKee after Jalen Hurts is sidelined by blood clot
Philadelphia will be without its starting quarterback against Carolina after a follow-up ultrasound showed movement in a blood clot the team described as superficial. Third-year quarterback Tanner McKee is set to make his first appearance of the 2026 season.
The Philadelphia Eagles will be without quarterback Jalen Hurts for Sunday’s game against the Carolina Panthers after a follow-up ultrasound showed movement in a blood clot, the team said.
The Eagles described the clot as “superficial” and said they are determining the appropriate course of treatment. Hurts, 28, was cleated during Philadelphia’s Oct. 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams and requested treatment four days later, according to the team’s account. An ultrasound in London on Saturday detected the clot; team medical staff then determined he could play. A second scan Wednesday evening showed it had moved.
Hurts played every snap in Philadelphia’s Week 5 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in London. He was listed with a calf injury on the team’s reports before that game and again on Wednesday ahead of the Panthers matchup. Asked about the injury Wednesday, Hurts said he had been hurt in the Rams game but declined to discuss further details.
Tanner McKee is expected to start against Carolina. The 26-year-old has not played this season. In six career appearances, he has completed 61.4% of his passes for 597 yards, with five touchdowns and one interception. He has started twice, going 1-1.
Rookie fifth-round pick Cole Payton is expected to serve as McKee’s backup. Andy Dalton had been the Eagles’ backup before he was released; the team had elevated McKee on the depth chart after Dalton threw an interception on his only pass in a game against Chicago.
Hurts’ absence leaves Philadelphia without its established starter as it prepares for Carolina, while the team focuses on determining his treatment and availability beyond Sunday.
