Wilmington house fire kills Tanya Rogers and John Poteat; two firefighters hurt
Tanya Rogers and John Poteat died after a fire tore through a Wilmington home early Tuesday. Two firefighters sustained minor injuries, and the cause is under investigation.
A fire that broke out early Tuesday at a Wilmington home killed a married couple and left two firefighters with minor injuries, officials said.
Fire crews were called shortly after 2:30 a.m. to the unit block of 8th Avenue, where flames were burning heavily on the second floor and spread through the roof. The victims were found in a bedroom, officials said.
Because of the intensity of the fire and concerns the home could collapse, firefighters evacuated the building and continued fighting the blaze from outside.
A family member identified the victims as Tanya Rogers and her husband, John Poteat. Rogers’ sister, Sharon Osborne, described the loss as overwhelming and said she was speaking with her pastor for support.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
