SEPTA restores Media/Wawa service after downed wires strand train near 49th Street
Downed wires stopped a train with passengers aboard on SEPTA’s Media/Wawa Line Monday evening, prompting shuttle buses and service delays. Trains resumed around 6:15 p.m., with residual delays of up to 20 minutes as crews worked to evacuate riders.
SEPTA service on the Media/Wawa Regional Rail Line was disrupted Monday evening after downed wires stopped a train near 49th Street with passengers aboard.
SEPTA sent shuttle buses to assist riders on the disabled train. Passenger Bridget Owen described sparks and a sudden stop, saying, “All of a sudden it sounded like we were in a plane crash.” She said passengers panicked as sparks flew.
The transit agency announced around 6:15 p.m. that service had resumed. Trains were moving around the disabled train, but riders were warned to expect delays of up to 20 minutes while crews worked to safely evacuate the passengers.
The disruption affected riders traveling on the line between Philadelphia and its western suburbs. No further details about the cause of the downed wires or any injuries were provided.
