William Penn brings six fall sports back after districtwide athletics pause

The William Penn School District reinstated several fall sports Monday, Oct. 19, after suspending athletics at its middle and high schools last week over an alleged incident involving a Penn Wood team.

The sports cleared to resume are cheerleading, boys soccer, boys and girls cross country, volleyball and girls tennis. The district has not publicly identified the team involved or described the allegation.

The district said it administered a climate and culture survey to fall student-athletes over the weekend and Monday. A survey for coaches is also underway. Before returning to coaching, each coach must review district policies and provide proof of participation in that process, according to the district.

William Penn has also contracted Grand River Solutions, a consulting firm that handles harassment and discrimination investigations, to coordinate the district’s response and investigate specific allegations of misconduct. The district said it is reviewing athletic operations and using feedback from students and coaches to identify areas for improvement.

The pause began Thursday, when the district suspended Penn Wood High School athletics, citing an alleged incident that raised concerns about the culture and climate of athletics. On Friday, the suspension was extended to middle school sports. Students at Penn Wood High School and Penn Wood Ninth Grade Academy walked out during the school day in protest.

In a Friday update, the district said the alleged conduct, if proven, could violate school board policies. It did not provide further details, and said it was working to hear from students and ensure a safe environment. The lack of specifics fueled rumors on social media over the weekend.

The reinstatements came ahead of a Monday night school board meeting. William Penn enrolls about 4,500 students from Aldan, Colwyn, Darby, East Lansdowne, Lansdowne and Yeadon, in Delaware County.
