Southern Nazarene teammates honor safety Tyler Ulrich after his death
Tyler Ulrich, a 21-year-old Southern Nazarene University safety, died Oct. 15, five days after being critically injured in a game in Arkansas. His teammates are wearing his No. 30 on their helmets as the Bethany campus and football program grieve.
BETHANY, Okla. — Southern Nazarene University football players will carry the memory of teammate Tyler Ulrich onto the field this season, including at the team’s home game Saturday, where his jersey will be on the sideline and he will be represented at the coin toss.
Ulrich, 21, died Oct. 15, five days after he was critically injured during the Crimson Storm’s Oct. 10 game against Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The university and his family have not released details about the injury or what caused it.
Before that game, head coach Dustin Hada told Ulrich he loved him and was looking forward to watching him play. Hada said the exchange has become especially meaningful since Ulrich’s death.
Ulrich played safety and studied finance. His family said he received athletic and academic scholarships and earned a place on the dean’s list every semester. Hada remembered him as a hard worker and talented player, but said his presence mattered just as much away from the field.
“He loved being around his teammates in that locker room,” Hada said, recalling how Ulrich brought energy to the group after wins and losses alike.
The team has added Ulrich’s No. 30 to the backs of its helmets. Players have also been meeting in team and position groups to share memories and talk about their grief. Hada said teammates are willing to be open with one another as they face the loss.
Support has extended across campus. More than 250 students attended a prayer service, and the university has held special chapel services and made counseling available. Students have left notes and prayers for Ulrich’s family in a campus prayer room. Alumni, including former football players, have also contacted the team.
Ulrich’s family described faith, kindness and close relationships as central to his life. Hada said Ulrich attended student-led Bible studies and chapel, and that seeing him with a Bible or journal was familiar around campus.
In a statement, the family thanked people for prayers, messages, meals and other support, and asked for continued prayers as they grieve. Ulrich’s funeral is scheduled for Sunday in Texas.
