Cowboys turn halftime deficit into 57-24 homecoming win over Colorado

STILLWATER, Okla. — Oklahoma State erased a one-point halftime deficit with a 34-point second half, beating Colorado 57-24 on Saturday night and improving to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in Big 12 play.

Quarterback Drew Mestemaker passed for 386 yards and four touchdowns, and running back Caleb Hawkins added 120 yards on the ground. The Cowboys amassed 598 yards and 28 first downs in their homecoming game.

Colorado led 24-23 at halftime after Isaac Wilson threw for 222 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another score. Mestemaker had already thrown for 264 yards and two touchdowns, but Oklahoma State settled for Sam Keltner’s field goals of 47, 30 and 41 yards rather than finishing several first-half drives with touchdowns.

The momentum shifted immediately after the break. Wilson lost the ball on a keeper on the first play of the third quarter, and Oklahoma State safety Quinton Hammonds recovered at the Colorado 24-yard line. Two plays later, Mestemaker connected with tight end Morgan McPhaul for a 3-yard touchdown that put the Cowboys ahead for good.

After forcing a Colorado punt, Oklahoma State drove 78 yards for another score. Hawkins helped move the drive with a 39-yard run and a 17-yard catch, extending the lead to 37-24.

Keltner made all five of his field-goal attempts, a school record for a single game. His five straight successful kicks also extended his streak to 18, tying Matt Amendola for the longest in program history.

Colorado (2-5, 0-4) managed only 120 yards of offense after halftime, punted four times and committed three second-half turnovers. The Buffaloes host Kansas State next Saturday; Oklahoma State visits Iowa State.
