OU places Sigma Nu on probation after finding coerced labor in pledge program
The University of Oklahoma says Sigma Nu used a system of personal servitude and coerced domestic labor during the fall 2026 semester. The fraternity must complete hazing education and revise its new-member program, among other sanctions.
The University of Oklahoma has placed its Sigma Nu chapter on disciplinary probation after an investigation found the fraternity responsible for hazing, including a system the university described as personal servitude and coerced domestic labor.
University officials said they received a hazing report about the chapter in September. Their investigation found that, during the fall 2026 semester, Sigma Nu ran a program called “BASICS” that required active members to receive personal service and domestic labor, according to the university’s hazing report.
The university imposed several sanctions: a hazing education workshop, a revised new-member education plan, an officer transition meeting and disciplinary probation. The report does not provide further details about the tasks involved or identify individual members.
The finding follows a separate hazing determination involving another OU fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha, less than a month earlier. The cases put renewed attention on how the university monitors fraternity recruitment and protects students from coercive practices.
