Norman withholds $1.5 million as it sues over Young Family Athletic Center defects

The city of Norman filed suit against contractors and designers involved in building the Young Family Athletic Center, alleging persistent moisture and water intrusion, incomplete work and negligence.

The lawsuit names more than a dozen contractors. Norman is holding back $1.5 million it says is owed to them until the problems are resolved. City officials said mediation efforts have not gone well.

The center, which opened in 2024 after voters approved it, remains open. The city says there is no health or safety risk to visitors. It declined a request for a tour to view the alleged damage, citing the pending litigation.

The case is the second legal dispute over construction problems at a Norman public facility. The city’s $39 million Central Library has been closed since 2023 because of water leaks and mold, and Norman has also sued contractors over that project.

A comparison of the defendants in the two lawsuits found one company named in both: the project management contractor. The companies being sued in the athletic center case did not comment when reached for a response.
