Jones man taken into custody after deputies dismantle home during armed standoff

Brandon Brookshire was arrested after a six-hour standoff Sunday at a home in Jones, where authorities say he had assaulted his mother and held her at gunpoint. The Oklahoma County sheriff said Brookshire had been placed on probation after pleading guilty to five charges in a separate case earlier this year.

Jones man taken into custody after deputies dismantle home during armed standoff

A six-hour standoff in Jones ended Sunday with an Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office tactical team bringing down the front of a home and taking 29-year-old Brandon Brookshire into custody, authorities said.

Deputies were called to a home on West Atlanta at about 10:30 a.m. after a report that Brookshire had tried to carjack his mother. She told investigators he held a gun to her stomach and beat her, according to authorities. She escaped as a Jones police officer drove by, flagged the officer down and prompted a call for the sheriff’s tactical team.

Authorities said Brookshire ran back inside and barricaded himself. The standoff ended with him in custody; officials said no one was hurt.

“The first thing we want to say about this specific incident is that it never should have happened in the first place,” Oklahoma County Sheriff Tommie Johnson III said.

Johnson said Brookshire was convicted in May on five counts stemming from a separate case involving a 13-year-old who had been held at gunpoint. Online court records cited by authorities show Brookshire pleaded guilty to two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault while masked, attempting to aid an escape and resisting an officer. He received suspended sentences on all five counts and was released on probation.

Johnson criticized that outcome, saying probation put Brookshire back in the community and that the Sunday incident could have been prevented. The allegations related to Sunday’s incident remain distinct from the earlier case; authorities did not provide details about any new charges in the information released.
