Man found dead after overnight standoff near Washington, authorities say

A 40-year-old man was found dead Sunday morning after an overnight standoff in rural McClain County that began with a report of stalking and a domestic disturbance, according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Dispatchers received a 911 call Saturday evening from a woman who said she was being followed by Cahlan Bowman. The OSBI said Bowman’s vehicle caused the woman’s car to crash near Southeast 12th Street and East Redbud Road in Washington.

When officers arrived, Bowman brandished a firearm, and law enforcement personnel fired shots at him, the OSBI said. Bowman ran from the scene and was located about a quarter-mile away in a rural area off East Redbud Road. Officers negotiated with him for several hours.

The McClain County Sheriff’s Office reported an active situation around 6 a.m. Sunday and asked residents to stay indoors and motorists to avoid roads near Southeast 12th Street, Redbud Road and Maple Road. Bowman was found around 7:30 a.m. with what authorities described as an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No other injuries were reported. The OSBI’s account did not say whether Bowman was struck by officers’ gunfire or provide further details about the shooting.
